Activity categories
Activity categories label apps (and browser sites) by type of work — Coding & Development, Creative, Productivity, Communication, Entertainment, Music, Gaming, Browsing, System, and Other. They are not tags; they never rewrite your tracked time entries. Charts, Timeline, Calendar summaries, and integrations can then show time by category as well as by app.
Turning them on
Section titled “Turning them on”Settings → Activity Tracking → Activity categories. With the toggle on:
- Popular apps get a category from Vetroscope’s built-in list. That works offline.
- Apps that aren’t on that list can be classified with machine learning when that capability is available on your account. You can also tap Categorize unknown apps to run a pass now.
- Expand Categories in the same section to see which of your tracked apps sit in each category.
Turn the toggle off to stop automatically categorizing new unknown apps. Categories you already have stay in place, Charts and Timeline still use them, and you can still change categories by hand.
Manual overrides
Section titled “Manual overrides”Use Manually apply category to set an app’s category yourself. Your choice always wins over anything Vetroscope assigned automatically, and it syncs when Cloud Sync or Home Sync is on.
Where categories show up
Section titled “Where categories show up”- Charts — switch the breakdown to Category.
- Timeline — the Activity lane paints category bands across the day.
- Calendar day summaries may mention categories.
- Chat, the Local API, and the MCP can report category totals.
Privacy
Section titled “Privacy”Unknown-app classification sends app names and optional browser project or site labels through Vetroscope to an AI provider. Successful results may also land in an anonymous shared catalog keyed only by those labels (no account identity). Catalog hits reuse a prior result without another model call.
